New essay competition for dental students launches

The Dental Trainees’ Committee is delighted to launch a brand new undergraduate essay competition for UK dental students, open for entries on 4 November 2024.

The winner(s) have the option to deliver an oral presentation on their essay at a future College dental conference and will receive a cash prize of £100. Winner(s) will also be celebrated in an upcoming edition of College Voice and other College communication channels including social media. 

This competition is open for UK students with any dental speciality interest in all years of BDS undergraduate study.  

Essay Title:  

Beyond lip service: how do we embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Dental Education?    

Objective:  

Write a structured essay outlining creative strategies to embed equality, diversity, and inclusion in dental education. Support recommendations with research and examples. You are encouraged to think outside the box and propose innovative approaches. 

Eligibility Criteria  

  1. Entrants must be current UK dental students.  
  1. Participants must be registered Affiliate Members of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. 
  1. Joint entries can be made by up to three individual entrants, all of whom must fulfil the eligibility criteria individually. Joint entries should be submitted using one email address, with names and College Personal Identifier (PID) numbers for each entrant clearly shown. Winners from a joint submission will split the prize of £100 equally. 
  1. The word limit is set to 1500 (+/- 10%), excluding references and words included in tables and figures.  
  1. Referencing will be in Vancouver, referencing style up to maximum of 20. 
  1. Submitted as PDF using Arial font size 12 with double spacing. 
  1. Images and diagrams are welcome. These must be original or royalty free. 
  1. The deadline for submission is 17:00 on the date specified on the website. 
  1. Essays submitted will be subject to satisfactory plagiarism checks.  
  1. Essays not compliant with the above will automatically fail and/or be ineligible for the national prize.
