Dr Dunn is the 166th (approximate) President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, which was founded in 1599. He aims to carry out our mission – to provide career support to our membership through education, training, professional development, examinations and assessment, whilst acting as a charity and leading voice on health issues in order to set the highest possible standards of health care. This means retaining the highest academic standards, and welcoming all who share our goals to become involved in a lively programme of academic, cultural and social events both within the College and in regions throughout the UK and internationally.
Dr Dunn was educated at St Aloysius College and the University of Glasgow, where he graduated in Medicine in 1970. His postgraduate training was at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the University of Oklahoma. He subsequently was appointed as a staff physician at the Ochsner Medical Institutions in New Orleans and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Louisiana State University (1980-83).
He returned to Glasgow as a Consultant Cardiologist at Stobhill Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, and then became Clinical Director of Cardiology at Stobhill (1994-2000) and North Glasgow Hospitals (2000-2006) NHS Trusts.
His academic career includes 150 publications and 15 book chapters, principally in the areas of hypertension and coronary artery disease. Dr Dunn has received research grants from a number of national organisations and has served on the Council for the British Cardiac Society and the Scottish Cardiac Society.
Dr Dunn has been actively involved with the College since the 1990s. He has served on the College Council and as Vice President (Medical). Dr Dunn has also contributed to the assessment of trainee physicians, as a member of the Part 1 Written Examining Board for the MRCP (UK) Diploma and other committees that set and validate the examination questions.
Over the course of his term, Dr Dunn looks forward not only to working with all of our members across medicine, surgery, dentistry, travel medicine and podiatric medicine, but also to welcoming many more people through the doors of the College, including students, the media, allied health professionals and the public we serve and engaging with our colleagues around the world.
