College welcomes new report on clinical leadership

College President Professor Jackie Taylor has welcomed a report published today (Wednesday) by the General Medical Council, which finds that good leadership and positive cultures are vital to healthcare and patient safety.

Speaking following the publication of the independent research, carried out by Dr Suzanne Shale, a researcher in organisational ethics and leadership, Professor Taylor said:

“I welcome this timely report and the insight that it’s given us on the vital role played by leaders in the heathcare sector.”

“We all know that there is a clear correlation between good leadership and effective team working and the care we provide to our patients. In light of the growing evidence in this area it’s vital that Royal Colleges take the lead in equipping our membership and the wider profession with the specialist skills they need to deliver the leadership our patients deserve.”

“That’s why our College is investing heavily in supporting our health sector leaders, from providing scholarships to support more women to take up leadership roles to providing a platform for renowned experts like Professor Michael West to speak at our forthcoming conference “Making Life Work Better” on 12 September. Hundreds of our Fellows, Members and guests have also now attended our series of President’s Leadership Lectures since they began last year. Professor Carrie MacEwan, the Chair of the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges will be presenting the next lecture in this series on 23 October.”

“Effective leadership is the cornerstone of good patient care. We must continue to work together to ensure that this important element of our work is given the support it requires to flourish and develop.”
