What is the Surgeons Portfolio?
A 'cradle to grave' electronic means of recording all aspects of a surgeon's professional life, including clinical practice, professional development activities, peer analysis and audit tools, all of which are tailored to Specialty requirements where appropriate.
This was developed on an intercollegiate basis with the support of the Specialty Associations.
It will deliver the requirements for revalidation and store valuable information for annual appraisal, all within an e-system which is compliant with data protection requirements.
As surgeonsportfolio incorporates the well-established eLogbook, all existing users will be able to utilise their information for the surgeonsportfolio. To sign up for an account, please register here.
Important information about the Surgeons' Portfolio
Having conducted an extensive review of the benefits and usage of the Surgeons' Portfolio, the Royal Colleges, through the Surgeons' Portfolio Governance Group (SPGG), have jointly made the decision to close the service.
The Surgeons' Portfolio was launched in December 2011. However, only 5,600 surgeons are registered, only 14% of these have used the service so far in 2016, and the number of regular users has declined over the last couple of years. When surveyed in July 2016, 82% of respondents said they use another appraisal portal in addition to the Surgeons' Portfolio.
The Surgeons' Portfolio incurs significant running costs – and in the long-term would require substantial investment in redevelopment. Given low use, and in the majority of cases the opportunity to make use of an alternative system, for example through a Trust, it has been agreed that closure of the service is the practical solution.
- December 2016 onwards – users can download any individual file in the system
- February 2017 – users will be able to export their data en masse (further details about the process to be provided in due course)
- 30 April 2017 – no new information or data can be added after this time (data extraction still possible up to 29 June 2017)
- 30 June 2017 – closure of the Surgeons' Portfolio
You will continue to have full functionality of the system up until the end of April 2017 so that it may be used to support your appraisal for the current year. Thereafter there will be a mechanism in place to allow you to download all your data from the system at one time.
We are aware that a small number of users may be adversely affected by the closure. However, by providing you with plenty of notice, we hope that the majority, if not all users, will have time to register and begin using an alternative system.
If you have any queries regarding this please contact Alanna Campbell on firstname.lastname@example.org.
