The Tom Gibson Memorial Award was established by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, the British Association of Plastic Surgeons and the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow to commemorate Professor Tom Gibson. Professor Gibson was a pioneer of plastic surgery and bioengineering, and also co-founded Strathclyde’s bioengineering unit. The award is made biennially between the two universities, and recognises outstanding accomplishment of young medics or scientists below the age of 40, who are employed by, or closely associated with, the Universities of Strathclyde or Glasgow.

The 2014 recipient, Strathclyde alumna, Professor Gail McConnell of the Centre for Biophotonics in the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences was presented with the award on Tuesday evening. The selection panel noted that:

‘Professor McConnell has shown her ability to combine physical technologies and biological sciences. She has shown outstanding accomplishment in her career to date’.

Professor McConnell is photographed with Dr Frank Dunn CBE – President of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, Professor Bernie Conway of Strathclyde’s Faculty of Engineering and Fraser Anderson from Alumni & Development (l-r).
