The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow has been awarded full museum accreditation by Museums Galleries Scotland.
The accreditation, which was awarded on 8 October 2015, is a welcome acknowledgement of the wonderful historical collections housed by the College, and recognition of the high quality standards of documentation and preservation upheld by the library and heritage team.
Joanne Orr, Chief Executive of Museums Galleries Scotland, said:
"Congratulations to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow on achieving Accreditation. The Accreditation Scheme develops and maintains museum sector standards and the panel were impressed with the work by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow to improve access to their collection as well as quality of the objects in their care."
Museum accreditation opens up many significant opportunities for the College, including the potential for funding to further develop, digitise and research the collections, and to realise new ways for the College to engage members and visitors with its rich heritage.
Library and Heritage Manager of the College, Ross McGregor, said:
"The award of Accreditation for the College’s historical collections sets a high standard for how we care for, and provide access to, our collections in future. The College can now develop its historical collections with national support and guidance, using Accreditation as a framework for improvement."
The Accreditation scheme is administered by Arts Council England, in partnership with Museums Galleries Scotland, Northern Ireland Museums Council and CyMAL.
