Royal College confers three new Honorary Fellowships

Three new Honorary Fellowships were conferred by the College at our second Virtual Diploma Ceremony on 15 April.

The prestigious awards were made to senior clinicians from across the world, who have made huge contributions to healthcare.

The Honorary Fellowships were presented by College President, Professor Jackie Taylor who said:

“This is our second worldwide virtual ceremony which welcomed over 170 new Fellows and Members to the College.

“I am delighted to present Honorary Fellowships to three eminent clinicians whose work is acknowledged across the world and welcome them to become Honorary Fellows of our international College.”

Receiving the awards were:

Dr Michael Valentine – Hon FRCP(Glasg)

Past President of the American College of Cardiology Dr Michael Valentine has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship for his services to cardiology.

Dr Valentine received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, where he was named Outstanding Senior, and his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He completed his medical residency and fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Emory University in Atlanta.

After fellowship, Dr Valentine joined private practice in Virginia in 1990. Dr Valentine is a senior cardiologist at the Stroobants Cardiovascular Centre of Centra Health in Lynchburg, Virginia, specialising in cardiac catheterization and intervention, device placement and arrhythmia therapy, clinical quality, leadership and practice development.

Dr Valentine served as President of the American College of Cardiology from 2018-2019 having been a member of the ACC since 1993.

Dr Richard Kovacs – Hon FRCP(Glasg)

Dr Richard Kovacs is a member of the Krannert Institute of Cardiology and Past President of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr Kovacs graduated from the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine in 1980 and completed an internship and residency at Indianapolis University (IU) Medical Centre where he served as fellowship training. While also at IU, he served as chief fellow and chief medical resident. He joined the Indianapolis University School of Medicine in 1986 as an assistant professor, subsequently serving as the medical director and CEO of Methodist Research Institute. He then worked as a senior clinical research physician at the Lilly Research Laboratories of Eli Lilly and Company.

Dr Kovacs returned to the Indianapolis University School of Medicine faculty in 2003 and has since served as the associate dean for Clinical Research and associate director of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

Dr Kovacs has been a member of the American College of Cardiology for over 30 years and was appointed President of the ACC in 2019.

Dr Kovacs’s primary research interests include measuring and improving quality, drug safety and sports cardiology. He also oversees the cardiovascular evaluations of players at the Annual National Football League Scouting Combine.

Professor Nadey Hakim Hon FRCS(Glasg)

The outstanding work of Professor Nadey Hakim – Hon FRCS(Glasg) has also been recognised by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Professor Hakim is a surgeon specialising in transplant and bariatric surgery. He is a Professor in Transplantation Surgery and Presidents’ Envoy at Imperial College London. He achieved his MD from Paris Descartes University and received his PhD in small bowel transplantation from the University College London.

To date Professor Hakim has published over 150 peer-reviewed publications and has authored and edited 23 textbooks in the fields of General, Transplant and Bariatric surgery. He is a Past President of the International College of Surgeons and Past Vice President of the Royal Society of Medicine.

With over 30 years of experience as a Surgeon, Professor Hakim has performed over 2,000 transplants and was part of the team of surgeons that performed the word’s first hand transplant in France.
