Former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Real Madrid team doctor, Dr Luis Serratosa, will join a number of international experts in sport medicine at a major conference being held in Glasgow today (Tuesday, 19 May 2015).

The conference, which has been organised by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, is expected to attract more than 180 professionals in medicine and sport to learn from experts in the field of the latest advances in sport and exercise medicine.

Other speakers at the event include:

  • Dr John MacLean, Chief Medical Officer Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and Medical Director of the National Sports Medicine Centre
  • Mr Doug Campbell, Consultant hand and wrist surgeon
  • Dr Niall Elliott, Head of Medical Services at SportScotland

Sir Alex and Dr Serratosa will present the "Professor Stewart Hillis keynote lecture", which has been established in memory of Professor Hillis, who is regarded as one of the pioneers of sport and exercise medicine and was instrumental in establishing this annual international meeting in Glasgow. Professor Hillis sadly died last year and, in his leadership and direction in sport and exercise medicine, has left a legacy to Scotland that will benefit the nation’s health for generations.

Professor Frank Dunn, President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow said, "It is highly appropriate that a high quality symposium is linked with the late Professor Hillis who was a pivotal figure in driving this speciality of sport and exercise medicine both within the UK and internationally.

"The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow has chosen Hampden Park as the location for the meeting partly because of the distinguished role that Professor Hillis had for so many years, both in setting up the sports clinic and in serving the Scottish international football team, the Scottish Football Association and UEFA over a 25 year period."

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is committed to continuing this legacy and has played a leading role in establishing guidance for the promotion of physical activity to improve the health of the nation. The conference is another of the College’s initiatives, which also include a "Walk for Wellness" challenge and the development of walking routes at local hospitals.

New guidance on how to manage concussion sustained during grassroots sport was also launched at the symposium today.

The Government’s Chief Medical Officer, Catherine Calderwood, and Concussion Campaigner Peter Robinson were joined by senior medics from the College, Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scottish Football Association, Scottish Rugby Union, and thesportscotland institute of sport, who have all worked collaboratively to produce the new set of guidelines.

The guidance launched is not sport-specific, but is intended for the general public and grassroots participants across all sports, particularly where medics may not be in attendance. Clear advice is given to ensure that concussion can be recognised quickly and managed effectively from the initial injury to a phased return to play using World Rugby’s latest guidelines.

The overriding message is that ALL concussions are serious and if in doubt, sit them out!

The Scottish Sports Concussion guidelines can be found on the Sportscotland website.
