On behalf of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, President Professor Jackie Taylor has welcomed the announcement yesterday of a health and social care workforce review in England.
Health Education England (HEE) has been commissioned by the Minister of State for Care, Helen Whately, to work with the partners and stakeholders to review long term strategic trends for the health and social care workforce.
The work will review, renew and update the existing long term strategic framework for the health workforce, HEE’s Framework 15, to help ensure the NHS has the right numbers, skills, values and behaviours to deliver world leading clinical services and continued high standards of patient care. For the first time ever, the framework will also include registered professionals working in social care, like nurses and occupational therapists.
Professor Taylor said:
“This review is very topical and while this is not exactly what the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) has been calling for, it is a welcome development and the progress made undoubtedly reflects the calls to government that the Medical Royal Colleges and others have been making.
“The review is good news for the NHS in England and I hope it may prompt the new Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care in Scotland, Humza Yousaf MSP, to commission something similar for the NHS in Scotland.”
HEE will shortly issue a ’Call for Evidence’ to identify the factors that may have the greatest impact on demand for the health and social care sector over the next 15 years, and what this means for the workforce supply, to support patients and the population of the future. We will be responding to the ‘Call for Evidence’ in due course and will ensure your views are represented. For more information or to get involved, please visit HEE’s website.
