College responds to COVID-19 new guidance and restrictions

As the number of cases of COVID-19 continue to increase across the UK, governments in all four nations have taken action to get the virus under control. This has resulted in new guidance and restrictions being implemented both regionally and nationally, with more expected in some parts of England over the next week.

President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Professor Jackie Taylor has called on all of us to pull together to do what we can to follow the guidance and reduce transmission. She said:

“The rapidly rising number of COVID-19 cases and hospital admissions is very worrying. Even though it is difficult for all of us, it is essential that we pull together and follow the latest guidance.

“We must act now to avoid a situation similar to that which we experienced in April with high numbers of cases, hospital admissions and deaths being recorded daily. The NHS needs to be able to look after sick patients with and without COVID-19 as well as deliver routine work, and the only way we can do that without services being overwhelmed is to reduce transmission of the virus.

“Everyone in healthcare is once more responding to the call to provide the very best care that we can. We need the public to help us by responding again and following the restrictions and guidance in place in the area where you live.”

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has issued the following statement:

“Medical Royal Colleges have warned that the current wave of COVID-19 could soon overwhelm the NHS. They say the only way this can be avoided is for everyone to abide strictly by the rules despite regional differences and sometimes complicated guidance.”
