On behalf of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, President, Professor Jackie Taylor has sent a message of support to all colleagues in India and their families around the world.
Professor Taylor said:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with our Fellows and Members in India who are faced with a second wave of COVID-19 so severe that it has close to 16 million confirmed cases.
“It is an unpreceded upsurge in cases and hugely challenging for all medical staff working exhaustively to help people. As we have seen in other countries, lack of oxygen supply is a major factor limiting colleagues’ ability to treat patients.
“As the situation unfolds we stand ready to do all that we can to support our membership in India.
“We will work closely with our Fellows and Members in India and all our partners, to help strengthen the ability of the health system in India to manage the impact of the pandemic.
“It is essential than India continues its programme of vaccination with more than 130 million doses administered so far. It is welcome news that from 1 May, all people over 18 will be eligible for the vaccine and that the Indian authorities are in ongoing discussion to obtain supplies.”
