Clinical Anatomy Skills Centre a first for Glasgow

Glasgow is set to further establish itself as a world leading centre for the training of healthcare professionals following a landmark partnership between two of Scotland’s leading medical institutions.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the University of Glasgow are joining forces to open a state of the art Clinical Anatomy Skills Centre.

The outstanding facility will enable existing and future medical professionals to develop their skills in medicine, surgery, dentistry and a range of other allied health professions in a safe, simulated environment. It will also help to form an enhanced understanding of human anatomy.

President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Mr Ian Anderson said, "This is the beginning of an exciting new project bringing the College and the University closer together. In today’s clinical environment it is recognised that competence, confidence and expertise in simulated skills should precede treatment on live patients. Whereas in the past this was not available, this new Centre will fill a gap in clinical skills and anatomy teaching from the basic to the highest levels of sophistication in surgical specialties, medical specialties and dentistry."

Head of the University of Glasgow’s College of Medical, Veterinary, and Life Sciences, Professor Anna Dominiczak said, "The Clinical Anatomy Skills Centre is a vitally important innovation for postgraduate students and medical practitioners in the west of Scotland. The skills that will be developed and honed at this new collaborative venture between the University of Glasgow and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow will not only benefit the profession but will also lead to improved treatment and care of patients.

"The University of Glasgow is already a world leader in research into major diseases including cancer, heart disease and rheumatic diseases. The new Centre will allow us to collaborate with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow to improve specialist skills of current and future health practitioners."

The work of the Centre will benefit from the University’s body donation programme and will be a lasting tribute to the memory of William and Elizabeth Davies, who are benefactors of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and whose Trust has made a generous contribution to providing the Centre with state of the art equipment.

The Clinical Anatomy Skills Centre will be sited in the listed Thomson Building at the University of Glasgow.
