Biography

Dr. Pramod Garg is currently Professor and Head of the department of Gastroenterology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He was the founding president of A.I.I.M.S., Raebareli and A.I.I.M.S., Bilaspur and helped establish these 2 institutions. At present, he is the President of A.I.I.M.S., Awantipora. He was till recently the Executive Director of Translational Health Science & Technology Institute, an apex research institute under the Ministry of Science & Technology. He is a renowned physician scientist with seminal research contribution in the field of pancreatic diseases and has developed newer effective therapies for patients with pancreatitis. During the COVID pandemic, he contributed significantly to research including therapeutics, vaccine effectiveness and development of new vaccines. He has published >225 original articles including several seminal papers in prestigious international journals such as JAMA, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Lancet Gastro Hep, Annals of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Gut with an h-index of 60 and >20000 citations. He is a recipient of the JC Bose Fellowship and a Fellow of all 4 national science societies: Indian National Science Academy (FNA), Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc), National Academy of Sciences (FNASc), National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS) and also Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) (Glasg). He has been conferred with many awards including ‘Om Prakash Bhasin Award’ in Health & Medical Sciences, ‘Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize’ for excellence in Biomedical research presented by ICMR, ‘Paul Webster Oration’ by American Pancreatic Association, and ‘Hoechst Om Prakash Award’ and Olympus J Mitra award’ by the Indian Society of Gastroenterology for outstanding contribution to science. He is the Secretary-General of the ‘International Association of Pancreatology’. He is also the ‘Editor-in-chief’ of the international journal ‘Pancreatology’ and has served on the editorial board of many international journals such as ‘Gastroenterology’, ‘Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology’, GI Endoscopy, and Scientific Reports (Nature). He has served as Chair/co-chair of various committees of the Department of Health Research, ICMR, and DBT. He has been invited by prestigious international societies including American, European, Japanese, Australian and Korean scientific organizations to deliver lectures in international conferences.
