Qualifications

Dr. Greig, MB ChB, MD, FRCS (Ed.), FRCS (Glasg.), FRCSEd (Gen. Surg.), FCS (H.K.), FHKAM (Surgery), graduated with Honours from University of Aberdeen in July 1982 and held junior surgical posts in the Aberdeen teaching hospitals. In 1985, he moved to Glasgow to complete a 3-year surgical registrar training and then to Edinburgh in 1988 to embark on an MD research thesis. In 1990, he was attached to University Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong for one year as a visiting lecturer. His surgical training was completed in Edinburgh as a lecturer and senior registrar, including one year in the Edinburgh Breast Unit. He was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon and Senior Lecturer (University of Edinburgh) in one of the Edinburgh Teaching Hospitals in 1995. He returned to Hong Kong on a permanent basis in 1998 to work as a surgical specialist in a large private practice (QHMS). In 2002, Dr. Greig with several of his colleagues established Hong Kong Surgical Specialists (HKSS)in Jardine House, a multidisciplinary practice of surgical and anaesthetic specialists with physiotherapists forming the Sports & Spinal Physiotherapy Centre (https://www.hkss.info). For the past 6 years, he has been the Managing Partner of HKSS and is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors.

In response to numerous questions from family, patients and colleagues with reference to the current status of COVID-19 infections and vaccine and drug developments, he began writing a series of commentaries on COVID-19 articles which were sourced from the Week magazine UK & USA, British Medical Journal and National Geographic, the first of which was 20 May 2020.

He has continued writing 1-4 commentaries per week over the past 18 months, now totaling over 70 which have been posted on the HKSS website and sent to the HKSS patient databases.

He has established a Covid Vaccination Counselling Service at HKSS to cover the spectrum of questions covering vaccinations in HK. This also covers to company workplace visits and webinars to promote vaccination against COVID-19.

General & Laparoscopic Surgical Services

Dr. Greig’s principal interests within the scope of general surgery cover laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery; colon cancer screening; hernia surgery at any age; comprehensive breast care for benign and malignant disease; vascular venous disease (varicose veins); upper gastrointestinal endoscopy; surgical dermatology. He also offers care for many other aspects general surgery including the abdomen, thyroid, common childhood surgical illnesses; excessive sweating, urology, male family planning, and executive health assessments which adopts a holistic approach to patients’ health.

Patient Care and Publications

In the 23 years Dr. Greig has been in Hong Kong, he has established: a colonoscopic screening program to prevent colon cancer (over 40 year old’s); a mammography screening for high and low risk women; the HongKong Hernia Centre; several new laparoscopic techniques in Hong Kong; early detection and treatment for skin cancers and screening for prostate cancer; production of guide-lines for disease management; and continuance of his professional development with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Hong Kong. Dr. Greig has published 1 book, written 6 book chapters, 51 scientific papers; 78 COVID-19 commentaries; 23 published abstracts and 19 letters.
