Citations for Applications for Clinical Excellence Awards 2021

25 Mar 2021

The College was pleased to assess applicants for Clinical Excellence Awards (CEA) in England and Wales earlier this month. CEA awards are not available in Scotland although Merit Awards still exist for those who received them in the past and are still working. They can be renewed but do not require citations.

Our College’s Honorary Secretary Dr Richard Hull has written about applications received for Clinical Excellence Awards.

The College was pleased to assess applicants for Clinical Excellence Awards (CEA) in England and Wales earlier this month. CEA awards are not available in Scotland although Merit Awards still exist for those who received them in the past and are still working. They can be renewed but do not require citations.

The College received a number of excellent applications which a group of College Office Bearers assessed. They were not applying for awards so there was no conflict of interest. There was a high rate of successful applications for citations with 60% at bronze level, 55% at Silver level and 75% at gold level being successful.

The College did not receive any applications from women and would like to encourage them to apply in subsequent years. Nationally this is known to be an issue despite efforts to encourage applications.

There was a spread of ethnic diversity amongst the applicant where this was stated on the form. There were no applicants who declared a disability.

The College encourages all those who are able to apply for clinical excellence awards to submit their application for consideration of a citation. We particularly encourage women to apply. While the future of CEA awards is uncertain, the college recommends early preparation of applications.

The process of applying for an award starts when the applicant writes an abbreviated CV. We assess these and rank writing a citation. It then goes through a process of assessment by regional and national committees which have consultant employer and lay representatives. They then go to a national Committee and finally to the minister for approval. The process takes about six months but the payment is backdated to April of the year awarded. So by giving a citation it supports the candidate but does not guarantee an award.

We also encourage all applicants to have a closer relationship with the college and take part in its activities such as teaching, examining or being a Regional Advisor or College Tutor. The committee was disappointed that the majority of applicants had limited connection with the college other than their Fellowship. An article on top tips for CEA Applications will appear late this summer.
