One of our core values at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is inclusivity. This reflects our commitment to mutual respect, kindness and care in all our interactions.
We will fly the Progress Pride Flag for Glasgow Pride on Saturday 18 July as a visible expression of this value, showing our support for LGBTQ+ Members and Fellows, staff, patients, and the wider community. We want to send a clear message that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
For those not aware, the Progress Pride Flag builds on the traditional Pride Flag by incorporating additional colours that highlight the importance of inclusion for intersex, transgender and non-binary people, as well as Black and Brown communities and those affected by HIV/AIDS. It recognises that some groups continue to face disproportionate discrimination and health inequalities, and reflects our ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
As a professional body dedicated to advancing healthcare and supporting a diverse membership, flying the Progress Pride Flag reinforces our commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels welcome, respected and able to thrive. We will all have stories of friends, colleagues or relatives who have faced discrimination and who have felt unable to be their true selves because of it. As a College community we’d like to consign those days to the past. Flying the flag is a small but visible commitment on the part of staff, Members and Fellows. It is not a political statement, but rather one of kindness and allyship.
