Alan Oliphant, Lay Advisor
After graduating from the University of Liverpool with an engineering degree, Alan joined a major European technology company as a programmer and later moved to Scotland to oversee the maintenance of its client software. He has since built a career in Edinburgh across Internal Audit, IT Audit, Information Security Management and Risk Management, with a strong focus on Information Technology. His work has spanned sectors including oil, brewing, financial services and government. Although Scotland-based, he has undertaken consultancy projects across Europe, North America, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. More recently, he has concentrated on skills transfer, providing training for governments in Eastern Europe, South Asia and Africa.
Throughout his career, Alan has been active within his professional bodies and has represented them on national and international projects, including the development of standards in Information Security Management. He has written extensively on IT Audit and has published several books on the subject.
Alan has been a lay examiner for the MRCS Part 2 examinations since 2015 and joined the College Audit and Risk Committee in 2020.
