After graduating from the University of Liverpool with an engineering degree, Alan began his career as a programmer with a major European technology company before moving to Scotland to oversee client software maintenance. He went on to build a career in Edinburgh in Internal Audit, IT Audit, Information Security Management and Risk Management, working across the oil, brewing, financial services and government sectors.
Although Scotland-based, he has delivered consultancy projects across Europe, North America, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. More recently has focused on skills transfer and training for governments in Eastern Europe, South Asia and Africa. He was active within his professional bodies, has published several books on IT Audit and contributing to the development of standards and regulation in relation to Information Security and Corporate Governance. He has been a lay examiner for MRCS Part B exam since 2015 and joined the College Audit and Risk Committee in 2020.
