Overview
Performance Support for Doctors in Training is an online course developed to help senior clinicians support doctors who are experiencing difficulties. You’ll gain clear guidance on GMC requirements, early identification of concerns, and strategies to manage and overcome common challenges.
With national updates, real case studies, and interactive sessions, you’ll leave confident in addressing issues effectively and supporting your trainees.
Ideal for senior clinicians, responsible officers, clinical and medical directors and clinical leads.
Learning outcomes
By attending this course, you'll be able to:
- State the requirements of the GMC in identifying and managing trainees with difficulties
- Identify those features which may indicate a trainee with difficulties
- List possible barriers to effective intervention
- Name the formal processes and procedures required when managing trainees with difficulties
Sessions are led by David Wilkin, Consultant in Acute Medicine and Director of Medical Education, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Live session 1
This one-hour introductory session will cover recognition and assessment of underperformance,
reasons and causes for underperformance, and an initial approach to managing the situation.
Online modules
These modules can be accessed on demand through your college dashboard under “My Digital
Learning” and must be complete prior to the second and final session

When watching this session, please note down your thoughts on how the feedback giver approached the situation‐ what went well, what did not go well, how you might have approached the situation, differently‐ for discussion during the second live session.
Live session 2
The 1.5-hour final live session takes place on a Friday afternoon and will include reflections on the
pre-recorded learning modules. This session will cover delivering difficult feedback with example
cases, before finishing the session and course with a final round-up and summary.
