Professor Norman MacKay CBE, a renowned clinician and highly respected Past President of the College, has died.
Professor MacKay served as our Honorary Secretary for 10 years before taking on the role of Visitor. He was elected as President in 1994, and was also a former Dean of Postgraduate Medicine at the University of Glasgow.
Professor Hany Eteiba, President, said: “It is with immense sadness that we share the news of Professor MacKay’s passing just a few weeks after he celebrated his 90th birthday.
“He was a distinguished Past President of our College and a highly respected colleague and friend. His contribution to the College and to the medical profession will be remembered with great respect, warmth and gratitude.
“Our thoughts are with his family, including Susie, Violet, Ronnie and Puff, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”
A service will be held at Mearns Kirk Church, Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire, at 10.30am on Friday 16 October 2026, to which all friends are invited. The family has asked for family flowers only, but donations in lieu can be made to East Renfrewshire Good Causes or Mearns Kirk Helping Hands.
The College flag will fly at half-mast on Friday as a mark of respect.
