MFDS Part 2 is a practical, scenario-based examination that assesses a candidate’s ability to apply their clinical knowledge, communication skills and professional judgement in real-world settings.
Successful completion of Part 2 indicates that the candidate has progressed significantly beyond the level of primary qualification and has achieved the competence required to move toward specialist dental training.

Candidates who have passed Part 1 can progress to MFDS Part 2. On passing Part 2, you will be invited to proceed to admission to the College as a Member.

To apply for MFDS Part 2, candidates must:
- Have passed MFDS Part 1, or hold an accepted exempting qualification
- Hold a primary dental qualification accepted by the General Dental Council (GDC) in the UK or that is acceptable to the Colleges
- Have completed 12 months' full-time, or equivalent part time, postgraduate experience in clinical dentistry
Follow these steps to apply for your MFDS Part 2 exam with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow:
- Create or log in to your College account
– Register through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow online portal. - Select MFDS Part 2 from available examinations
– Choose the exam diet you wish to apply for from the list above and click 'Apply now' to be taken to the online portal login page. Enter your email and password to begin your application. - Submit your application
– Complete all required fields and upload any supporting documents. - Make payment
– Pay the exam fee securely online. - Confirmation
– You will receive a confirmation email and further instructions once your application has been processed.
- Places for the MFDS Part 2 exam centres are limited. Applications will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
- Candidates for MFDS Part 2 will be required to attend on one day only. Details will be confirmed when the exam programme is circulated shortly after the closing date.
- When applying for the exam, the date selection function allows you to give an indication of date preference for the exam, however date allocation is done manually after the closing date, based on candidate numbers.
- The exam venue may change, within your selected location. Please do not book travel or accommodation until you receive confirmation from the exam administrator that you are booked on the exam, your confirmed exam date and confirmed venue.
- The College may either cancel an examination centre if there are insufficient candidates or restrict numbers should this be necessary.
- Fees are correct at the time of publication. The College reserves the right to amend these fees in advance of the closing date.
- In the event that the College has to cancel an examination or restrict numbers, the examination fee shall be reimbursed, but the College shall incur no further liability.

The MFDS examination will be changing in 2026, and the current examination will be phased out during 2027. This webinar is designed for candidates who have either passed Part 1 and are planning to sit Part 2 in 2026 or 2027 or who wish to begin MFDS Part 1 in the next year. We’ll share information on what is changing and why and help you to understand the options open to you as we approach the change. The webinar is designed for candidates who plan to sit their Part 2 examination in Hong Kong.
You’ll hear from senior clinicians involved in the MFDS exam, alongside members of the exam team. You’ll have a chance to ask questions and find out more to help you plan your exam journey.
In addition, you’ll hear about exciting new Dental Specialty Fellowship Examinations coming in 2026 and 2027. These will be available for ten specialties and, like the new MFDS, will be offered by a tri-collegiate group consisting of our College, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
The MFDS will be a pre-requisite of sitting the fellowship examinations and so we encourage anyone interested in specialty exams to attend and find out more.
