Overview
This digital learning module is designed to help with the delivery of paediatric surgery in resource limited settings. It’s supported by the Scottish Government to build on the expertise shared as part of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow's Livingstone Fellowship.
This course is authored and presented by Dr Azad Patel, a paediatric surgeon based in Zambia. Additional contributors for this project include Dr Goran Jovic (Reconstructive Surgeon), Dr Misozi Miti (Neurosurgeon), Dr Vincent Mulenga (Paediatric Surgeon) and Dr Chipo Mbeba (Paediatric Surgeon).
There are six modules. Each one is expected to take between one and two hours to complete. The modules are:
- Neonatal General Surgical Conditions
- Infant Paediatric Surgical Conditions
- Common Paediatric Urology Pathologies
- Childhood General Paediatric Surgical Conditions
- Paediatric Neurosurgery in Zambia
- Pre-referral management of common congenital anomalies in plastic and reconstructive surgery
The Livingstone Fellowship project aims to support the medical profession in Zambia and Malawi and make a positive difference to the health of people living in areas where access to quality healthcare is limited.
Learning objectives
Upon completion of this course you should be able to:
- Identify and describe the common general surgical conditions presenting in neonates.
- Recognise and differentiate between common surgical conditions affecting infants.
- Recognise and manage common paediatric urological pathologies.
- Evaluate and manage common general surgical conditions encountered in childhood.
- Identify common paediatric neurosurgical conditions prevalent in Zambia.
- Recognise and assess common congenital anomalies requiring plastic and reconstructive surgery.
