Overview
Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an important development in dental and maxillofacial imaging, providing three-dimensional visualisation to support diagnosis and treatment planning. This course provides dental and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills required to safely justify, prescribe, undertake and support the use of CBCT imaging in accordance with current UK legislation, guidance and best practice.

This Cone Beam CT (CBCT) Level 1 Course is being provided in partnership with the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (BSDMFR) with all teaching being undertaken by Consultants in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (DMFR) based in the UK.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the rationale for using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in dental practice.
- Describe the principles of CBCT imaging and how it differs from conventional 2D radiographic techniques.
- Compare the benefits and limitations of CBCT relative to other dental imaging modalities.
- Identify common CBCT image artefacts and explain their causes and potential impact on image interpretation.
- Apply clinical justification criteria to determine when CBCT imaging is appropriate.
- Explain the risks associated with CBCT examinations and the principles of radiation protection and dose optimisation.
- Describe the role of CBCT in diagnosis, treatment planning and patient management.
- Apply selection criteria when referring patients for CBCT examinations.
- Recognise normal dento-alveolar anatomy as represented on CBCT images.
- Understand the requirements for CBCT reporting and identify when specialist radiological input is required.
- Interpret current legislation, guidelines and professional standards governing the use of CBCT in dental practice.
- Define the responsibilities of the Referrer, Practitioner and Operator under IR(ME)R and demonstrate an understanding of their respective roles in safe and effective CBCT use.

This Cone Beam (CBCT) Level 1 course is suitable for members of the dental team and healthcare professionals involved in, or intending to be involved in, CBCT imaging. This includes:

- Dental nurses who hold a Certificate in Dental Radiography (CDR)
- Dental hygienists and dental therapists who are appropriately trained in 2D radiography
