The Director of Surgical Education provides senior clinical leadership for the College's surgical education portfolio, supporting the Vice President (Surgical) in the strategic development, quality assurance, and promotion of surgical education activities.

Working closely with the Vice President, Head of Education and Surgical Education Manager, Surgical Education Board, clinical faculty, and wider education team, the Director of Surgical Education will help ensure that the College delivers high-quality, innovative and relevant educational programmes that meet the needs of surgeons throughout their careers in the UK and internationally.

The postholder will act as a key ambassador for the College representing its interests and views on matters relating to surgical education, training, and professional development within external organisations and collaborative forums.

The role is honorary, with reimbursement of reasonable expenses.

The role

  • Support the Vice President (Surgical) in the development and implementation of the College’s strategic vision for surgical education.
  • Provide expert clinical advice on the design, development and enhancement of educational programmes, courses and resources.
  • Contribute to the identification of new opportunities for educational innovation, growth and collaboration.
  • Support the Head of Education and Surgical Education Manager with strategic delivery of surgical education.
  • Advise on alignment with relevant regulatory, professional and educational standards.
  • Review educational outcomes, participant feedback and performance data to inform programme development.
  • Represent the College at intercollegiate, national and international meetings relating to surgical education and training.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with Royal Colleges, Specialty Associations, regulators, training bodies, healthcare organisations and educational partners.
  • Act as a visible clinical leader and advocate for excellence in surgical education across the College.
  • Chair the College Surgical Education Board, ensuring strong representation on this Board across specialties, and directing the work of this Board.
  • Lead on the development and delivery of key surgical courses and conferences.
  • Undertake other duties as appropriate

Meeting attendance

  • Attend and chair the Surgical Education Board meetings three times annually
  • Represent College bi-annually at The Surgical Intercollegiate SAS Education Committee
  • Participate in strategic planning discussions with the Vice President (Surgical) and College staff.
  • Represent the College as Director of Surgical Education at external meetings as required.

The anticipated commitment is approximately 1–2 programmed activities (PAs) per month on average, although this may vary according to College priorities and projects.·

Who are we looking for?

The Director of Surgical Education should be a Fellow of the College in good standing. They should have an active interest, knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to education and assessment, with a working knowledge of the career progression of surgeons in the UK and internationally.
