The Deputy Director of Surgical Education will support the Vice President (Surgical) and the Director for Surgical Education in the delivery and continuous improvement of the College’s surgical education activity.
Working closely with the Surgical Education Manager and the wider education team, the Deputy Director will provide clinical leadership for the operational delivery of surgical education programmes, supporting faculty engagement, programme development and educational quality improvement.
The Deputy Director will act as an ambassador for the College, promoting engagement with surgical education activities, supporting faculty development and representing the College at internal and external meetings as required. The postholder will deputise for the Director of Surgical Education when appropriate and contribute to ensuring that the College’s education provision remains relevant, innovative and responsive to the needs of surgeons throughout their careers.
The role is honorary, with reimbursement of reasonable expenses.
The role
- Support the Director of Surgical Education in the implementation of the College’s strategic objectives for surgical education
- Work closely with the Surgical Education Manager and Education & Assessment team to support the effective day-to-day delivery of educational programmes and activities.
- Provide clinical advice and guidance on educational content, course development and faculty requirements.
- Support the development, delivery and evaluation of surgical courses, conferences and educational events.
- Assist with the identification of new educational opportunities and areas for programme enhancement.
- Support recruitment, engagement and development of course directors, faculty and clinical contributors.
- Actively promote participation in College educational activities amongst Fellows, Members and trainees.
- Deputise for the Director of Surgical Education at internal and external meetings as required.
- Represent the College at educational meetings, conferences and stakeholder forums.
- Support the Director in communicating key developments affecting surgical education and training.
- Attend and contribute to meetings of the Surgical Education Board.
- Support implementation of actions arising from Board discussions and strategic priorities.
Meeting attendance
- Attend Surgical Education Board meetings three times annually.
- Participate in planning discussions with the Director of Surgical Education, Vice President (Surgical) and College staff.
- Deputise for the Director of Surgical Education at meetings of the Surgical Intercollegiate SAS Education Committee and other external groups as required.
- Represent the College at educational events, courses and stakeholder meetings as appropriate.
The anticipated commitment is approximately 1 programmed activity (PA) per month on average, although this may vary depending on College priorities and projects.
Who are we looking for?
The Deputy Director of Surgical Education should be a Member or Fellow of the College in good standing. They will have an active interest, knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to education and assessment, with a working knowledge of the career progression of surgeons in the UK and internationally.
