On World Diabetes Day, our College is delighted to lend its support to The College of Podiatry, which has today relaunched Improving Diabetic Foot Care: A Guide for Commissioners

The toolkit, which provides data on foot care services, outcomes and estimated costs for Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) in England, has been updated to include the latest available information and health economics.

Foot disease affects many people with diabetes and imposes a high cost on sufferers and NHS budgets. Foot ulcers are experienced by 1 in 15 people with diabetes and they have a severe effect on quality of life and are often prolonged. They can lead to lengthy spells in hospital and ultimately amputation, increasing costs to the NHS.

College of Podiatry Clinical Director Paul Chadwick said: ‘It is important that this toolkit provides commissioners in CCGs and STPs in England with the most up to date information on diabetic foot disease for their local areas. We hope that this toolkit will aide the commissioning of the necessary services which might help to prevent  and treat the complications that arise in those suffering with diabetes related foot disease’
