The College was delighted to welcome members and guests to a recent joint event with the Faculty of Advocates on Tuesday 13th March which provided a platform to discuss the impact of the Montgomery ruling on medical consent on medical staff and patients, and the challenges that remain for the wider health service.

Lauren Sutherland QC, a member of the legal team that represented Montgomery, opened the evening with a presentation on the Montgomery case, and the legal interpretations that have emerged.

Ms Sutherland was then joined by David Stephenson QC, Dr Anthea Martin, Joint Head of the Medical Division at the MDDUS, and Mr Roddy O’Kane, consultant neurosurgeon, to discuss the ruling and its implications while answering questions from the audience.

As part of the College’s public engagement work the event was broadcast live on Facebook.
