We welcome the decision regarding vaccination of 12-15 year olds across the UK. Case numbers have been rising rapidly over the last number of weeks and our hospitals are under extreme pressure. It is critical that we do all we can to get infection rates down and protect ourselves and our loved ones.
Already, so many high school students have been impacted by the need to isolate due to other friends and family being infected. This has left them unable to attend school, meet with their friends or attend parties and clubs, which can be damaging to physical and mental health and wellbeing. The sooner we progress with vaccinations and get this virus under control, the sooner we can all get back to a more normal way of life.
Vaccinations in older age groups have proved to be highly effective in protecting against covid19. Recently, trainee medics across Scotland reached out to their peers in their 20s and 30s appealing to them to take the vaccination when it is offered to them. This was on the back of trainees seeing a number of unvaccinated young people in our hospitals suffering from the devastating effects of the virus.
We have also recently seen an increase in people over the age of 60 being admitted to hospital with covid19. People over 60 are more vulnerable to the virus and we know that while young age groups may be less susceptible to the severity of the virus, they will appreciate the opportunity to protect their loved ones and slow down the transmission of the disease.
