Lay Examiner

Lay Examiners Recruitment - MRCS Examination

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is looking to recruit Lay Examiners for the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) examination. This examination is essential for the career progression of trainee surgeons in the UK and determines that trainees have acquired the knowledge, skills, and attributes required for the completion of core training in surgery.

Our Lay Examiners play a vital role in assessing trainees’ communication skills. To be considered for appointment as a Lay examiner, you require:

  • High levels of integrity and professional standards
  • Commitment to ongoing assessment, training, and development as an examiner
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to remain objective and dispassionate where necessary
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion

Lay examiners should not be qualified in professions allied to medicine or have received previous medical training. Successful applicants will be provided full training before they are qualified to examine.

Lay examiners are asked to commit to a minimum of four days per year. Examinations are held in Glasgow in February, May, and October and in South West England in May and October.

Full information is provided within the person specification/further particulars document, which can be accessed along with the application form below.

Informal enquiries can be sent to mrcsb@rcpsg.ac.uk. Completed application forms should also be submitted to the email address above.
