Professor Oo is a practicing consultant physician and geriatrician at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals. Alongside this, he demonstrates passion and dedication to improving medical education, having held many clinical examination and academic roles throughout his career.
On taking up this new role, he said:
“I am humbled and honoured to take on this clinical leadership role in the College. I want to express my sincerest thanks to Dr Graham Curry, my predecessor, who is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and senior PACES Examiner, for his outstanding leadership, especially during the pandemic. It is unlikely that I will surpass his leadership and legacy, but I am committed to investing all my efforts in our MRCP Clinical Examinations and other medical assessment work. We are a truly inclusive and forward-thinking physician assessment panel. I invite all physician colleagues from diverse backgrounds to join us and contribute to the progress of future generations through assessment. Their impactful support is always hugely valued and highly appreciated across the College Community.”
Professor Oo became a Fellow of the College in 2016. Since then, he has played an integral role in shaping the College’s educational programmes, with a strong focus on fostering equity in medical education, addressing differential attainment in the UK and internationally. In his previous role as Associate Director of Medical Examinations, he represented the College on the Clinical Examining Board and MRCP(UK), where he oversaw the development of the PACES23 examination.
Throughout his career, he has been a champion for reducing inequalities in healthcare for patients and professionals. He has served as a member of College Council and Chair of the College’s Inclusion Advisory Group since 2019, where he continues to lead on work to further embed Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) across all our activities. He is also the founding Chair of the British Geriatrics Society’s EDI working group, which promotes an inclusive culture for geriatricians and advocates to reduce health inequalities impacting older adults.
In 2023, he was appointed as Visiting Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University, India. Earlier this year, he became Head of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme at the University of Leeds, where he also serves as Chair of Medical Education and Inclusive Practice.
College President, Mike McKirdy said: “The College has no doubt that Professor Oo will bring his commitment, enthusiasm, and his great appreciation for learning to positively shape the future of our College’s examinations. We wish him every success in this new role.”
