A new trial to separate travel, accommodation and subsistence costs from doctors’ study leave allocation has been welcomed by the Resident Doctors’ Committee at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
The news, announced this month by Public Services Delivery Scotland, means these costs will not be deducted from resident doctors’ notional allocation of £600 per training year.
The ‘test of change’ will run until Friday 26 March 2027.
Cameron Boyle, Vice-Chair of the College Resident Doctors’ Committee, said:
“Resident doctors are the future of healthcare, and our patients deserve care that is shaped by the highest quality training.
“This trial is very welcome progress as it will allow doctors in Scotland to use their full study leave allocation on vital educational training and events, rather than the costs associated with attending them.”
Claire Fuggacia, Co-Chair of the Committee, said
“It will make a particular impact on those resident doctors working in rural areas, where travelling to events in the central belt can be expensive. We commend PSD Scotland on this progress, which brings study leave allocations in line with those in England.”
The test of change began on Monday 21 September and runs until Friday 26 March. Following this, PSD Scotland will assess whether the approach can be extended.
