You can quickly check your eligibility criteria with this form, or you can read the full eligibility criteria below.
Member
Individuals who have sat and successfully passed the MFDS Part 2 examination or the Specialty Membership Examinations with us are eligible to join the Faculty as a Member. Membership is also open to those with a Membership qualification from another UK/Irish Royal College, e.g. MJDF, MFDS RCS (England), MFDS RCS (Edinburgh), MFD RCS (Ireland) or a Specialty Membership Examination qualification. To apply for membership, simply complete this application form along with evidence of your qualifications.
Membership without examination
Applying for a membership without MFDS or equivalent is also possible for experienced dental registered practitioners.
Applicants who wish to apply through the non-examination route must provide evidence of:
- A minimum of 10 years post-registration (BDS) experience (the focus is on what you have achieved rather than the length of time you have been qualified)
- Clinical experience and expertise in the areas of dental education, research and/or leadership/management
- Continual significant contribution to the standing of the dental profession
To apply via the non-examination route, complete this application form. Please attach your CV, all supporting evidence, and the names of two sponsors, both of whom should also provide a statement of support. Both sponsors must be current Fellows, one of whom must be from this College. The other can also be from this College, or from another eligible UK/Irish Royal College. Failure to send all the relevant information may delay your application.
Ideally, both sponsors should know you professionally and personally so they are able to vouch for the accuracy of the statements and evidence you have provided.
For further information, please contact dental@rcpsg.ac.uk.
Admission process
Applications for membership are considered at various times throughout the year. Successful applications will be required to pay a joining fee (currently £180) and an annual subscription fee.
Members will be invited to a formal diploma ceremony followed by an informal evening of food, drink and music, hosted by the College President.
This an ideal opportunity to engage with other Members and Fellows, and find out more about your membership benefits.
Following admission to the College, Members are entitled to use the post-nominal MFDS RCPS(Glasg) and/or any Specialty Membership post-nominal awarded.
This College Celebration is charged at £20 per person (maximum number of guests per Fellow or Member is 3).
Fellow
Individuals who have sat and passed one of the ISFE examinations are automatically eligible to join the Faculty as Fellows. Fellowship is also open to those who have a Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship of another UK/Irish Royal College (e.g. FDS RCS(Eng), FDS(Ed), FFD(I)), obtained via examination.
For existing Members seeking elevation to Fellowship, a minimum of 5 years' consecutive Membership of this Faculty of Dental Surgery is expected before nomination.
Fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery is also offered to dental surgeons who have made substantial contributions to their specialty, or who are senior members of the dental profession and whose published works and attainments are of such distinction as to justify election. Ultimately, eligibility will be determined by the Dental Fellowship Sub Committee.
