We believe that health services and systems benefit greatly from diversity. Progress has been made, but there still remain many opportunities to improve the way we work, and ensuring that equality, diversity and inclusion are at the forefront of decision making.
Key areas we believe need to be addressed are:
Increasing the number of medical and dental school students from areas of multiple deprivation and from non-traditional backgrounds
Ensuring international recruitment is achieved ethically, not impacting negatively on the person’s home country
Ensuring those in leadership roles with the health service are representative of the wider workforce and population
Expansion of Scottish Clinical Leadership Fellowship Scheme, providing additional opportunities for those who are currently under-represented in leadership roles
Build on the success of programmes, such as the Scottish Government’s Reach programme, to increase support available to medical schools and available to school students from areas of multiple deprivation and from non-traditional backgrounds to help them choose a career in medicine
Make funding available to medical schools and other organisations providing financial and pastoral support for new medical students from areas of deprivation
