Artist Commission – Admitting Women

We invite artists to apply for this commission, working with us to introduce engaging new display elements into the historic College Hall, addressing gender inequality in the College's history.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow seeks an artist to work on this commission as part of its Heritage and Inclusion programme. We are looking for an artist with experience of working with organisations, collaboratively, and with an interest in addressing gender and equality issues.

The College was founded in 1599, and today it has a community of over 15,000 members globally. The College is a worldwide community of inspiring health professionals working together to advance the medical profession and improve patient care.

The commission aims to address gender inequality in the College's history by redisplaying its historic College Hall, with new display elements that celebrate and commemorate the four women who first applied for fellowship in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The Admitting Women project and the overall Heritage and Inclusion programme have been inspired by the College's current president Professor Jackie Taylor, the College’s first female president in its 422 year history. This milestone has allowed us to celebrate Professor Taylor’s and other women’s inspiring leadership in medicine, while examining the issue of gender inequality in our history.

The Heritage and Inclusion programme addresses inequalities in the College’s heritage and identity, including how this is expressed within the St Vincent Street building and in particular College Hall. Addressing this openly, critically and creatively allows the College’s heritage and identity to be more engaged and relevant to its community.

The commission follows a recent research project – Admitting Women – which uncovered the history of gender inequality in the College’s admission of women as licentiates and fellows in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The findings of this research and the College's extensive historical collections will be fully accessible to the artist as part of the commission. The commission will result in a redisplay of College Hall, in an exciting shift to help make this historic room a more dynamic and inclusive space.

The commission runs from 04 October to 03 December 2021. The fee is £3850. If you have any questions about the commission please contact Ross McGregor -

The full artist commission brief is available here.

This project is supported by Museums Galleries Scotland.
