Nottingham Regional Advisor for Surgeons

David is a cardiac surgeon in Nottingham. He trained in London and qualified in 1981. Since then he did his surgical post graduate training in Leeds, obtained his FRCS in 1985 and then trained in cardiothoracic surgery in Leeds, London, Newcastle, Southampton and Sydney. David was appointed Senior Lecturer in cardiac surgery at Glasgow University in 1992, performing Scotland's first heart transplant on his first day in post. He moved to Nottingham in 1995. At various times he has been Head of Service, Clinical Director and Divisional Director, Chair of the Regional Training Committee, and an examiner for FRCS, MRCS and the specialty board exam in cardiothoracic surgery. He currently chairs the internal quality assurance committee of the JCIE. David is also an internal professional adviser to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman and an honorary associate Professor in both cardiovascular science and in engineering at Nottingham University, where he has research interests in trauma and in mechanical circulatory support. He is passionate about socialised medicine, English rugby and salmon fishing. He has also been known to slowly climb the occasional Munro in fine weather.
