Veena is an Equality and Diversity expert who has worked in diverse positions ranging from teaching to senior management. She has worked extensively with the strategic, public, private, community and voluntary sector and has produced a variety of guidance and toolkits on equality issues and working with diverse communities. As a qualified teacher, Veena spent 14 years teaching in a number of schools in both deprived and affluent areas. She was Regional Advisor for the Home Office’s Drugs Prevention Advisory Service(DPAS) and the National Assistant Head of Diversity for DPAS. In 2004 she became Assistant Head of Community Development and Cohesion at Government Office for the North East in which role she was responsible for overseeing a number of government initiatives and programs. In 2008 Veena joined Gateshead Council as the Strategic Manager of the Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service, advising local services on the education of children from Black Ethnic Minority, Gypsy and Traveller backgrounds as well as refugees and asylum seekers. Veena is Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear and a Board member of Newcastle Age UK, Northumbria Police SIAG, Crown Prosecution Scrutiny group and a lay member of the Glasgow College of Physicians and Surgeons. She also contributes to a number of voluntary charity organizations
