In his current post Alex provides a specialist Oral Medicine service to Glasgow and the West of Scotland. This is based around clinical sessions in Glasgow Dental Hospital, providing patient care and clinical training to the training grade staff in Oral Medicine as well as other training grade staff who attend on rotation. An advisory service is provided to the surrounding Oral and Maxillofacial units.
He is also fully involved in the clinical governance and clinical audit process to strive for excellence in patient care in the Oral Medicine service provided from Glasgow Dental Hospital.
The areas of clinical practice in which he has most interest are in Paediatric Oral Medicine problems, the medical aspects of dental care, and oro-facial pain. He provides an advisory service to the local practitioners regarding the provision of dental care for patients with medical problems and has recently been part of the working group of SDCEP to develop clinical guidance for the Scottish NHS in the dental management of patients taking bisphosphonate medication and the issues with prescribing in NHS dentistry in Scotland.
In addition Alex teaches Oral Medicine to 4th and 5th year dental students, including lectures, tutorials and clinical demonstrations. He also teaches clinical medicine & surgery to year 2 and 3 dental students in Glasgow and medical emergency in dentistry management to all years of the dental undergraduate curriculum.
