Roy graduated from Glasgow University in 1983 and obtained his FRCS(Glasg) in 1987. His early surgical training was in the West of Scotland. On completion of this, he moved to University College Hospital in London, where he trained until obtaining his Senior Registrar post in the Wessex Region. He was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon in Swindon, Wiltshire, where he has practiced since 1996. He has examined in the MRCS since 1999, becoming an intercollegiate examiner in 2004. He was involved in the design of this first intercollegiate surgical assessment and went on to chair the ICBSE Communication Skills committee in 2006. He also attended the ICBSE as a consequence of this. He has an interest in laparoscopic general surgery and surgical education. When not doing this, he is happiest in the Austrian Alps in the winter.
