Admission ceremony

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow will award six Honorary Fellowships to the College at its Admission Ceremony today (23 November 2018).

Honorary Fellowships are awarded to individuals of the highest distinction and eminence in their profession, in special circumstances or who has rendered outstanding service to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow or the wider healthcare community.

Speaking ahead of the Admissions Ceremony, College President, Professor David Galloway said:

“We are delighted to be able to make this prestigious award to such a broad range of eminent medical professionals. Each one of them has made a significant and substantial contribution to medicine in their own field.
“It is testament to the global reach of our Glasgow College that we are able to welcome such a diverse and international group to our membership.”

Surgeons

Honorary Fellowship in Surgery – Hon FRCS(Glasg)

Dr Mahanama Gunasekara
MBBS(Colombo), MS, FRCS(England), FRCS (Edinburgh)

Dr Mahanama Gunasekara is the President, College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka 2018. He is also a Consultant General Surgeon, National Hospital, Colombo and an Honorary General Surgeon for the Sri Lanka Air Force – commissioned as Honorary Group Captain in 2018, in recognition of services rendered to the Sri Lanka Air Force.

Dr (Ms) Jayshree Pranshankar Mehta
MB BS, MS(Surgery), FICS

Dr. Jayshree Pranshankar Mehta is Past President of the Medical Council of India. She was Vice-Chancellor, Sumandeep Vidyapeeth University, Piperia, Vadodara. She is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and PastPresident of Gujarat Surgeons’ Association. She was awarded the best Consultant of the year award in 2008-09 by the Indian Medical Association, Gujarat Branch.
She was awarded ‘Lifetime Achievement Award Woman’s Day – 2016’ by the Indian Medical Association and also awarded ‘IMA Distinguished Service Award’, 2017 on IMA Foundation Day by the Indian Medical Association. She was awarded SAMBHAVAA Lifetime Achievement Award, 2018 by FICCI Ladies Organisation, Ahmedabad.

Honorary Fellowship in Surgery – Hon FRCS(Glasg)

Professor Fabio Quondamatteo
FAS, FRSB

Professor Fabio Quondamatteo is a professional and licensed Anatomist with a strong interest and background in Electron Microscopy and in Extracellular Matrix. He is currently Chair in Anatomy at the University of Glasgow. He has a long standing experience as an Anatomist, and actively collaborates as a referee for various journals.
He has been External Examiner at King’s College London, and currently he is an External Examiner at the University of Edinburgh and at the University of Liverpool.
He is also a Fellow of the Anatomical Society and of the Royal Society of Biology. One of his main academic goals is to continue supporting and further developing a modern teaching offering in Anatomy covering the entire spectrum of the subject from the macro- to the nanoscale and integrating anatomical knowledge into a wider functional, biological, and clinical context.

Professor Srinath Chandrasekera
MB BS MS FRCS FEBU

Professor Srinath Chandrasekera has been in the forefront of establishing endo urological services and pioneered a PCNL program for children in Sri Lanka. Srinath together with local and international counterparts, initiated an international fellowship-training program in PCNL initially for British surgeons and more recently enhanced this program to include urologists from Africa and other parts of the world. He is a faculty member for Asian Urological Surgery Training and Education Group (AUSTEG) and has been a resource person for endourology training in Pakistan, China, Thailand and Algeria. Prof. Chandrasekera is the honorary Secretary of the Board of Study in Surgery at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) and also the honorary treasurer/council member of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka. He has been one of the key persons to promote closer ties between the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka, Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Professor Stephen H Powis
BSc (Hons) BM BCh PhD MBA FRCP

Professor Stephen H Powis is the National Medical Director of NHS England and Professor of Renal Medicine at University College London.
Previously he was Medical Director (and latterly Group Chief Medical Officer) of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust from 2006 to 2018. Professor Powis was also a member of the governing body of Merton Clinical Commissioning Group for five years and a Director of Healthcare Services Laboratories LLP.

Dental

Honorary Fellowship in Dental Surgery – Hon FDS RCPS(Glasg)

Professor Jonathan Shepherd
CBE FMedSci

Professor Jonathan Shepherd graduated in dental surgery from Kings College London in 1974. He was appointed professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Cardiff University in 1991 where he founded, and for 20 years chaired, the University’s violence research group and the city’s pioneering violence prevention board. He developed the Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention which has been widely adopted in Scotland, across the UK and in the United States and Australia. This work won his University a Queen’s Award and won Professor Shepherd the Stockholm Criminology Prize. His research and advocacy led to the historic first guideline published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) – on the removal of wisdom teeth. Professor Shepherd is an honorary fellow of the Royal Colleges of Psychiatrists, Surgeons of England, and Emergency Medicine, and of the intercollegiate Faculty of Public Health. He is a member of the UK Cabinet Office “What Works” Council and of the Home Office Science Council. He is honorary professor at Deakin University in Australia.
