Celebrating 65 years of the NHS

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is delighted to extend birthday greetings to the NHS as it celebrates its 65th Birthday. The contribution that the NHS has made to all our lives is inestimable. Recent events have clearly demonstrated the need to keep the patient central to the service and not to let other considerations divert from that focus. While there are major quality, financial and workforce issues at present there is a will among the public, within the Royal Colleges and other medical institutions and within the Government to maintain this most important of institutions at the heart of British society.

Our President, Dr Dunn said;

"I have been a proud NHS employee for 43 years and a user throughout its existence. For a large part of that time I worked in Stobhill Hospital which reflected all that is good in the service – a caring and compassionate approach – a family atmosphere, dedicated staff, innovative practices, and an emphasis on quality of care for patients. I have no doubt that there are many other hospitals throughout the UK with similar attributes. It is indeed a time to celebrate all the good that has come out of the NHS, a service which remains a beacon of health delivery throughout the world."
