Adopt a Book

The Library of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow contains the books of some of the most significant authors in medicine dating back more than 500 years. Despite care and attention, the years have taken their toll on the bindings of many of these works and urgent conservation work is now required.

Conserving such important texts costs between £150 and £400 a volume and this is where we need your help. Our Adopt a Book scheme allows you to fund the conservation of the book of your choice. You may like to adopt a book for yourself or on behalf of family or friends as a very personal and unique present.

How it works

Choose a book from the list of works identified for conservation. The cost of conservation is given for each work. Alternatively we can help you choose a suitably needy work from books not on the list. For help in choosing such a work please contact a member of the library staff at library@rcpsg.ac.uk. Once a suitable work has been chosen, and we receive your completed form, the book will be sent off for conservation.

Smaller donations to our appeal are welcomed as every contribution will help us to preserve our treasured books. A donation of between £10 and £50 will be put towards the purchase of phase boxes. Phase boxes provide immediate protection for damaged and vulnerable books and help to prevent them from deteriorating any further. A donation of £50+ will be put towards the conservation costs of a book(s) selected by the library team. We will generally select the books which need the most urgent care and attention.
