The College heritage collections include a wide range of materials relating to medicine, surgery and dentistry in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. The archives of the College itself date from the early 17th century, with the majority of materials dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. We also hold deposited archive collections from former (and present) Members and Fellows, and collections relating to local medical societies. The College Library and Archive services can also be used to help family history researchers trace medical, surgical or dental ancestors.
In addition to our Library and Archive collections, the College holds a range of other interesting historical items. Our museum collection contains instruments dating from the 18th century with a particular emphasis on those manufactured in Glasgow. Our art collection includes portraits of former Presidents and other figures connected to the College, as well as a number of paintings by contemporary artists. We also hold a collection of several thousand medical pamphlets from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries and a fascinating collection of rare books which date from the 15th century onwards.
