The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow Clinical Trainer Development Course will provide you with learning and teaching skills, communication, coaching and dealing with difficult students. With a focus on supporting the training and professional development of trainers specifically this course is designed for those holding a named trainer role in secondary care. It will also be useful for those new to educational supervision. Covering many key supervision principles in the context of an educational and clinical environment, including leadership styles, leading teams and mentoring, this course will provide you with skills to support your trainees. Delivered by professional clinical leadership and management experts and senior clinicians, this online course will provide you with enhanced skills for delivering education and training.
Format of the course:
To provide necessary flexibility to potential participants, the College has restructured the course content to enable remote delivery and participation. It will, however, retain interactive small-group elements that enhance the quality of the learning experience. The new format is comprised of:
Introductory online live session (1 hour) – This will introduce the content, aims and requirements of the course and provide clear instructions on accessing and working through its online learning resources. The introductory session for this course will take place on Wednesday 24 March from 17.30-18.30.
Online individual learning (2 hours) – Key elements of the course content will be delivered through online learning (Moodle).
As part of this course we also ask you to write a short reflective commentary on your learning from this course. This is expected to be around 500-600 words and will be for discussion at the final meeting. We won’t be expecting you to send this to the College, just to confirm you have written it. It will provide something you can add to your appraisal portfolio along with the course attendance certificate as evidence of training in and reflection on educational supervision of trainees. The commentary should include reflection on what you learned, or what you feel has been usefully updated from previous training; and anything you plan to do or change as a result of this course: perhaps planning to expand your current training roles, or change how you or the department you work in provide induction or supervision meetings.
Live online session (2 hours) – In the final, online session there will be extended reflective discussion of central aspects of the online material as well as interactive case sessions and discussion on the reflective assignment. This online session will take place on Wednesday 21 April from 14.00 to 16.00.
