The College’s Trainees’ Committee has appointed two new Co-Chairs following its election of new office bearers.

Jennifer Cathcart and Shreyas Chitnis have been elected as Co-Chair (Physician) and Co-Chair (Surgeon) respectively.

Jennifer Cathcart

Jennifer is a gastroenterology trainee working in the North of Scotland. She graduated from the University of Dundee in 2009. There she undertook her foundation training and following this she spent a year working in Kagando Hospital, in a rural part of Uganda.

For the next three years, Jennifer spent this working in hospitals across Glasgow before moving to Aberdeen. She was a member of the Trainees’ Committee before taking on her new role.

On becoming Co-Chair (Physician), Jennifer said:

“I am keen to faithfully represent trainees across Scotland and the UK. I hope to help resolve trainee issues and improve trainee satisfaction. I additionally want to promote the global nature of the College.”

Shreyas Chitnis

Shreyas grew up in Glasgow and moved to Wales to continue his undergraduate training at Cardiff University. Shreyas returned to Scotland to complete foundation training in Glasgow, a LAT year in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery in Edinburgh and then core surgical training in Glasgow. Shreyas is now continuing his training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in London.

Shreyas has recently been appointed as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and has been an affiliate member of the College since 2016. Shreyas completed his MRCS exam in 2019 and subsequently became a full member.

Shreyas has been a member of the Trainees’ Committee since 2018 and has taken an active part in organising events for trainees during his time in the committee.

On becoming Co-Chair (Surgeon), Shreyas said:

“I am grateful for this appointment. I hope to continue the fantastic work of my predecessors and aim to help the college develop and support trainees as future clinicians by engaging with them and representing their views. The COVID-19 pandemic has been very challenging for trainees and I hope our committee can restore and maintain high standard of training during these difficult times.”
