We are committed to challenging the norm and standing up for equality and diversity. We want our College community to reflect the diversity in the NHS workforce. We are very active in seeking to address the imbalance of women in senior medical leadership roles and our President Prof Jackie Taylor is leading by example.
Please do get in touch if there is an area of work focused around the inclusivity issues faced by the healthcare profession that you would be interested in working with us on – contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Voting rights extended to international Fellows and Members
As part of the College’s review of its governance structure and processes, we are pleased to confirm that all Fellows and Members of the College and its Faculties (who have paid the current year’s subscription fee appropriate to their own country of residence), will now be able to vote in the annual elections to College Council and Faculty Executive Boards. This resolution was passed at the College’s Annual General Meeting on 4 December 2020, with 90% in favour of the motion.
In addition to voting rights, international Fellows and Members in good standing will also be able to support the nominations for all vacancies on these Boards (all candidates for College Council and the Faculty Executive Boards require two supporters for their nomination to be valid).
Finally, two seats on College Council and one seat on each of the Faculty Executive Boards have now been opened up to allow international Fellows and Members to hold office and participate fully in the governance of their specific Faculty.
It is important that we have an up to date email address to ensure that you receive all information regarding nominations and elections. Please login to your personal dashboard to check that the email address we hold for you is accurate and update as necessary.
These changes came into effect immediately following the College AGM and also apply to Associate members of the Faculty of Travel Medicine. Full details of all the current College governance rules can be found in the Regulations and the Byelaws.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy
The enduring purpose of the College is to inspire, support and nurture our members to enable them to deliver the highest possible standards of care for their patients. This purpose is fulfilled in a way that is aligned to our core values of:
- Community: working together to support one another to succeed.
- Inclusive: demonstrating care, kindness civility, generosity and mutual respect.
- Innovative: proactively challenging current thinking.
- Integrity: never compromising on our core purpose, our standards and quality.
- Inspiring: leading by example to maximise potential and affect change.
In 2020 the College created a new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Policy. This policy reinforces the College’s purpose and values. An EDI Action Plan will set out how the College puts the new policy into practice during 2020-21 and beyond – monitoring and reviewing all aspects of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and taking action to address discrimination and inequality. The ethos of treating all people fairly and with respect is inherent in putting this policy into practice.
Inclusion Advisory Group
The Inclusion Advisory Group was formed in November 2020 to oversee the implementation of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Policy, and to monitor and report on progress of the EDI Action Plan. The group is led by Dr Moe Oo (Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust), and comprises members from medicine, surgery, dental surgery, travel medicine and podiatric medicine, as well as representatives from International Advisors, Trainees, and SAS doctors communities.
The call for members of the Inclusion Advisory Group received an overwhelming response from the College community. Therefore, we decided to form an Inclusion Forum for any members from anywhere in the world (including students) who have an interest in equality, diversity and inclusion issues. This will be a forum for positive change, inspiring the College’s inclusion priorities, and providing insights to the Inclusion Advisory Group on key EDI issues and developments. More details on the Inclusion Forum will be published soon, but if you would like more information or would like to join the forum, please email us on email@example.com.
